Paediatrician or GP?

Paediatrician or GP?

In the past, specialists were only accessible via a referal from a General Practitioner whom, having exhausted all known remedies for a particular ailment, would concede that one with specialist training and experience on that particular ailment would be better suited for further treatment and support. With the advances in modern medicine and availability of information on the internet, most parents are loath to wait for a referral when faced with a sick child and a host of symptoms which could indicate something sinister. Paediatricians are now accessible as a first port of call, rather than a last measure and this has resulted in many a life saved.

Thus the short answer is: If you can afford to visit your child’s paediatrician and you suspect a serious disease, or if your child is under a year and thus not able to consume most prescibed medications, then that is the time to visit your Paediatrician without delay.
